+Carbon Death is an artistic research collective founded by Julien Ottavi and Jenny Pickett, operating at the intersection of sound art, visual installation and critical environmental inquiry. The collective pursues research without disciplinary allegiance — deliberately positioning itself at odds with the conventions of artists, curators, scientists and academics alike, through a wilful impertinence toward the established languages and methodologies of each of these fields. Taking concrete as its central material, metaphor and subject, the work draws on J.G. Ballard's novel Concrete Island — in which an architect becomes stranded on a strip of land between motorways — inheriting Ballard's excavation of the social fissures buried within our constructed utopias: the interconnected isolation of infrastructure, the myth of the home, the slow violence embedded in modern urban form.

-A purely online installation built around continuous, evolving feedback systems using strings and transducers, generating slow and sustained drones that developed over days — existing exclusively as a live internet stream during the pandemic period.
+Babble v.1 is a temporary intervention in the landscape, 8 hydro-phonic bowls - these are small red sculptures that host piezoelectric devices that allow the micro-vibrations to be collected at proximity, amplifying the surface sounds of the river's flow, babbling and burbling over fallen trees and rocks. These devices were able to isolate and remix the chatter of the river in real-time - her flow becomes a stream on the internet - replaying the idea of the continuous flow in cyberspace.
+After several years of research and recording of underwater sounds around the world, we wanted to set up a sound installation that could take up certain elements of this research while proposing a form of sculpture that would be part of the surroundings without interrupting it - but rather with a view to revealing it, opening up another listening area and transforming the currents of the flow into a spatialisation of music composed of liquid sounds.

We aim to construct a set of relationships and translation systems for code tied to network hacking methods and activity detection, machine names, and information transmission through the ether. Silence does not exist, and the internet is noisy. We are the time travelers crossing projected space in obsolete bodies. Chaoslab extends this notion of chaos and entropy to the representation of the network; it is not a finished, established work, but rather protocols for transforming an invisible virtual space.
